Someone like you (by Sarah Dessen)

5 12 2010

I really don’t have much to say about this novel. I started it on my train ride to work and finished it coming back home that same day… Should this be an indication about how good it is? Hardly, more like how flimsy it actually is. OK, so there are some nice cutesy thoughts here: the friendship between the 2 main characters knows no boundaries, female solidarity and all that, sticking by each other, and all that, even teenage pregnancy. But apart from that? Bad boys drinking beer, teenage girl (Halley, like the comet) swooning over said bad boy. Moms who’re against bad boys. Teenage girl who doesn’t listen to dear old mom. Teenage girl who ends up being hurt. Who’s there? Best (pregnant) friend of course. That’s it.

As for Sarah Dessen? Yeah, she’s real popular. I don’t really know why. I mean, this is the first book I have read by her, and it’s just nothing special. Not bad. Just nothing special. All fairly straightforward, simple even. Is this what makes her books so appealing?

PS. An edit after reading The Truth About Forever… how could I have been so wrong about Sarah Dessen???
